Latest on Telkom eSim in South Africa

Telkom, one of South Africa’s major mobile network operators, has launched support for embedded SIM (eSIM) technology.

This allows customers with eSIM-enabled devices, such as certain smartphones and smartwatches, to connect to Telkom’s network without a physical SIM card.

The eSIM support was launched in 2021, enabling customers to activate a tariff plan using an eSIM voucher pack that contains a QR code with the necessary information.

The eSIM activation process for Telkom involves obtaining a voucher pack, which includes a QR code, and then installing the eSIM profile on the device.

Telkom’s eSIM support is available for both prepaid and postpaid services.

The eSIM technology is built into devices and cannot be removed, unlike a traditional SIM card.

As of the most recent information, Telkom charges a one-time activation fee of R99 for eSIM support and does not charge a monthly fee for the eSIM itself.

However, there is no linked number service for wearables, and the monthly fee for a linked number is not available for eSIMs on Telkom’s network.

The eSIM support is part of Telkom’s efforts to provide more convenience and reliability to its customers, as eSIMs are embedded in devices and are more reliable than traditional, physical SIM cards.

Which smartphones are compatible with Telkom’s esim support

Telkom’s eSIM support is available for a limited range of smartphones during the launch phase. The compatible devices include:

  • Apple: iPhone XS, iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and Apple iPad 7th generation and higher
  • Huawei: Huawei P40, Huawei P40 Pro, Huawei P40 Pro+
  • Samsung: Samsung Galaxy Note 20, Samsung Galaxy S21, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2

Unfortunately, Telkom’s eSIM support does not include wearable devices such as smartwatches. The support is limited to smartphones and tablets only for now, with plans to expand to other devices in the future.
